Wet Belts ( Timing Belts )
Wet belts are so named because they are located inside the engine and are lubricated by oil, similar to a timing chain.
However, they are lighter than metal timing chains and create lower friction than the traditional external timing belt. Wet belts have now become popular with manufacturers such as Ford, Peugeot, and Citroen because their other advantages include improved fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions. Designed initially with a life expectancy of around 150,000 miles, or up to ten years, it is not uncommon for wet belts to fail much sooner – sometimes as early as 30,000 miles.
With this in mind, Regency Autos is pleased to offer advice about the condition of your vehicle’s wet belt, especially after its mileage hits around 30,000 miles, by providing an honest appraisal of its condition for your complete peace of mind. You could be avoiding a potentially expensive repair bill.
Does my car have a wet belt?
Wet belts are commonly found in a range of popular engines, most notably Ford EcoBoost engines, as well as certain Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall models. Because these engines are widely used across many everyday vehicles, there’s a good chance your car may be fitted with one without you even realising.
If your vehicle is equipped with a wet belt, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval. Leaving it too long can lead to the belt breaking down, contaminating the engine oil and, in some cases, causing serious engine damage.
If you’re unsure whether your car has a wet belt, the easiest way to find out is by contacting our team. We can quickly check your vehicle and advise whether a replacement is recommended.

We always advise taking a proactive approach to wet belt maintenance. Leaving replacement too late significantly increases the risk of the belt breaking down, contaminating the engine oil and causing serious internal damage. In many cases, this can lead to catastrophic engine failure and costly repairs
Frequently Asked Questions
About Wet Belts
What is a Wetbelt ?
A wet belt is a type of timing belt that runs inside the engine and is lubricated by oil. It is designed to reduce friction and improve efficiency, but over time it can degrade and break down, potentially causing serious engine damage if not replaced at the correct interval.
How do i know if my car has a Wetbelt ?
Many modern vehicles are fitted with wet belts, particularly Ford EcoBoost engines and certain Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall models. If you’re unsure, contact our team and we’ll check your vehicle for you.
How long does a Wetbelt last ?
This depends on the engine, but many manufacturers recommend replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or around 6 years. In some cases, official intervals may be longer, but we always recommend replacing the belt earlier to reduce the risk of failure.
Can i still drive my car if the Wetbelt is due ?
If your wet belt is due or overdue for replacement, we strongly recommend getting it checked as soon as possible. Continuing to drive increases the risk of failure, which could result in serious engine damage.
Do all garages replace Wetbelts ?
No — wet belt replacement is a specialist job that requires specific tools and experience. Many garages do not have the capability to carry out this work properly. At Regency Autos, we carry out wet belt replacements regularly and use the correct equipment for each vehicle.
Is Wetbelt replacement covered under warranty ?
All wet belt replacements at Regency Autos include a 12-month parts and labour warranty for peace of mind
